The C64 runs Commodore BASIC 2.0, which is based on Microsoft BASIC.Ĩ0 IF Y’ error. For an extremely simple but fun example of how BASIC can be used, let’s take a look at an application for the Commodore 64 ( courtesy of C64-Wiki) that moves an arrow around the screen while printing its screen coordinates using a joystick connected to the second joystick port. To start off with, let’s see a bit of what BASIC is about. Are people actually still using the Basic language? As BASIC implementations between different home computers were relatively consistent, this provided for a lot of portability. Running existing BASIC code as well as compiled programs on one’s computer, or even typing them in from a listing in a magazine all belonged to the options. In this interpreter shell, one could use the hardware, write and load BASIC programs and save them to tape or disk. Instead of compiling BASIC source code, BASIC interpreters would interpret and run the code one line at a time, trading execution speed for flexibility and low resource use.Īfter turning on one’s microcomputer, the BASIC interpreter would usually be loaded straight from an onboard ROM in lieu of a full-blown operating system. This was good, because compiling a program takes a lot of RAM and storage, neither of which were plentiful in microcomputers. The advantage of having BASIC integrated into these systems was obvious: not only were most people who bought such a home computer already familiar with BASIC, it allows programs to be run without first being compiled. When the 1970s saw the arrival of microcomputers, small and cheap enough to be bought by anyone and used at home, it seemed only natural that they too would run BASIC. Taking its cues from popular 1960s languages like FORTRAN and ALGOL, it saw widespread use on time-sharing systems at schools, with even IBM joining the party in 1973 with VS-BASIC. Fortunately most of these licensed or were derived from the most popular microcomputer implementation of BASIC: Microsoft BASIC.īASIC has its roots in academics, where it was intended to be an easy to use programming language for every student, even those outside the traditional STEM fields. This wasn’t necessarily always the exact same BASIC the commands and syntax differed between whatever BASIC dialect came with any given model of home computer (Commodore, Atari, Texas Instruments, Sinclair or any of the countless others). There was a time, not even that long ago, when the lingua franca of the home computer world was BASIC. In addition to inspiring a large part of home computing today, BASIC is still very much alive today, even outside of retro computing. Surely BASIC is properly obsolete by now, right? Perhaps not. ![]() The half-life is the time required for the amount of a substance in the body to be reduced by half ( 23). Melatonin has a half-life of 1–2 hours, depending on the formulation. ![]() There have been other occasions where games have had licensing issues – the remake of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, for example. This should never have happened they should never have been caught out with such short-term licenses in the first place. This technical, legalistic reason makes perfect sense – but it shows how ill-prepared Turn 10 Studios and Xbox Game Studios have been. Rather than pay more money to update or extend their license agreements, evidently the decision has been taken to shut down the game, remove it from Game Pass, and pull it from sale altogether.įorza Motorsport 7 features a number of different real-world cars and racetracks – the licenses for which are apparently due to expire. Specifically the licenses they hold for certain vehicles and racetracks are set to expire, and when they do the game will no longer be able to be sold. The reason, according to Turn 10 Studios, has to do with licensing. This is the first time I’ve seen a major Microsoft-published title by a Microsoft-owned studio disappear, and I’m sure I’m not the only one who wanted to figure out why this has happened. ![]() But the games that tend to disappear from the service have thus far been third-party titles, and usually unimportant, smaller, older, or indie games rather than major titles. Xbox Game Pass does periodically lose games, and to be fair to Microsoft and Xbox these are always announced ahead of time as has been the case with Forza Motorsport 7. To say that all of this struck me as odd would be an understatement. How has Microsoft managed to lose Forza Motorsport 7 (far right) from Game Pass? I only spotted this a couple of days ago on the Xbox Game Pass for PC app, but I felt compelled to comment. Yet for some reason the game will soon be unavailable to purchase or to play via Game Pass, effectively killing the game and reducing it to a single-player experience for those who purchased it ahead of its imminent withdrawal date. So why, then, is Forza Motorsport 7 about to be removed from Xbox Game Pass and pulled from sale altogether?įorza Motorsport 7 is less than four years old, having been released in October 2017. The games are Xbox and PC exclusives, which makes perfect sense because their developers, Playground Games and Turn 10 Studios, are wholly-owned subsidiaries of Microsoft, and the games are published under the Xbox Game Studios brand. The Forza Motorsport series – and its Forza Horizon companion – is Microsoft and Xbox’s answer to PlayStation’s long-running Gran Turismo, and also competes well against other racing sims like Project CARS, Assetto Corsa, and many more. ![]() The Fablelands were by far my favorite part, and I didn’t realize how much I missed the first time I was there. ![]() After my first play through, the game was a lot easier to manage when I had a lay of the land and a general idea of what was going on. Not only was it not scary, I felt like the story, or lack of story, in Inheritance didn’t do anything to further the story in Layers of Fear. I played the game through several times and only remember jumping once. The game just isn’t as scary or intense as its predecessor. Unfortunately, I found the DLC pretty lacking. The "Forever" ending has the player end as Lily, a famous actress. The "Flame" ending has the player end as James, a famous actor. LAYERS OF FEAR: INHERITANCE follows a young woman returning to her childhood home to work through lingering memories of an abusive childhood. The third ending is obtained if there is an equal split in the choices made. ![]() Two endings depend on the player primarily following or disobeying the Director. There are three endings which are dictated by the player's decisions in the key scenes. James and Lily tried to escape the ship, however only one of them was able to survive. To make things worse, the ship's crew began keeping strict control over the food rations, making it even harder for the two to steal food. The two struggled frequently to find food and stay out of the guards' sights, which began taking its toll on them. Life on the boat was rough for the children, especially for James, the younger sibling. It is revealed through dialogue and notes that The Actor had previously been on a similar ship as a child, that they (along with their sibling) had snuck onto the vessel to escape from their abusive father. The game then cuts to The Actor waking up and getting out of bed, while The Director berates them, saying that " are a poor excuse."
